Training Your Dog? Try These Products & Tips For 100% Success
You love the dog and your stuff, but your dog doesn’t love your stuff. Unfortunately, he does not appreciate things like you do. If something looks like a tasty chew toy, it will probably get chewed. These products are designed to address problems like this and others.
To train a dog to stop barking you must first train him to bark on command. When the dog barks on command instead of when he chooses to bark, it is easier to teach him to stop barking during the training session. Once he learns the command for “stop barking” he will follow it outside of training.
A dog’s name should only be used when positively interacting with the animal. Call the dog’s name to get him to come to your side or call his name when you are serving his dinner. Don’t, however, call your dog’s name when you are unhappy with his or her actions. The dog would negatively associate that with punishment.
As you begin working with your dog on their training program, make sure to pay close attention to their diet. Much like humans, a dog gets their fuel from what they eat each day. Having a diet that is not nutritionally sound can affect a dog’s behavior and make training more difficult.
House training your puppy can be a lot faster and more effective using a crate. The crate should never be used for punishment. The puppy should be put in it at night and in between times of interaction with his owner. His natural instinct is to not relieve himself in his sleeping area.
Never leave a tied dog unattended for long lengths of time. Even the best trained dog can become excited and active enough that they snarl up their chain or rope around and around itself or another object. If you don’t catch this in time your dog could actually twist his collar tight enough that he suffocates.
Understand that during training, what your dog eats will go out of their system. In order to foster routine toilet habits, give your dog good food between 2 and 3 times daily on a firm schedule. Doing so allows you to gain a clearer picture of when your puppy might need to relieve himself outdoors.
If your dog suffers from separation anxiety, an easy way to train them out of it is to avoid giving them attention immediately before and after you leave. It may seem mean to the dog if you don’t say goodbye before you leave, but those long goodbye cuddles just give the dog a chance to get worked up.
Make sure you are having fun when you are training your dog each day. If you do so, your dog will feel closer to you, and even respond to training better. While training can be fun, try having play time with your dog every day for a period of time.
Always use similar calls or gestures to attract the dog’s attention. Start commands with their name all the time. You can get their attention by doing this and then use the command. Dogs listen for their name because they know it means you will say something else.
If your dog suffers from separation anxiety and gets restless when you are about to leave the house, you should feed your dog right before you leave. This will keep your dog busy while you prepare and distract it from the stressful situation. This should make the separation much easier.
To teach your dog how to walk on a leash, you should start by getting your dog used to the leash at a young age. Walk around your yard or garden with your dog on a leash at first. Reward your dog if it does not tug on the leash. Use a command such as ‘come’ and tug on the leash at the same time. Your dog should quickly understand that you wish it to follow you.
One tip to keep in mind when training your dog is that it is important to ensure that your dog has all of his needs fulfilled. Your dog will not respond well to praise or punishment and will not be able to focus on learning skills, if he is not being well taken care of. Be sure to feed him well, shelter him comfortably and spend time playing with him.
It is important to be patient when teaching a dog how to use the bathroom outside. Every dog learns at his own pace and what may work for one dog may not work for another, especially if your dog is young or used to going to the bathroom inside the house.
Never punish positive behavior. If your dog successfully goes to the bathroom outside, and then you leave him, it is as if you are punishing him after he has achieved the results that you desire. Instead, reward him by playing ball with him for a while or rubbing his belly.
It’s important to use treats that really capture your dog’s full attention when training. Even if it is something they are not normally allowed, such as cheese or hotdogs.
Many behavior problems can be solved by additional exercise. If your dog is acting out, he may not be getting enough exercise. Try to walk your dog at least three times a day. If your dog is a working breed, at least one of those walks should be a run. A tired dog is often a well-behaved dog.
You should never use ‘puppy pads’ if you are trying to teach your dog how to go outside. Pads that dogs pee on are viewed by them as okay areas that they can go and they will smell the area as well. The wee-wee pads may also teach your puppy that anything of the same shape and size is okay to use as their indoor toilet! It is best to have your dog use the bathroom outdoors all the time.
Finally, you have to stop the dog from using all of your things as chewtoys. This will keep your dog from injuring themselves while saving you quite a bit of money as well. Use the tips here and your training will help the dog to stop chewing.
